October 18th and 19th the sailing team traveled to Annapolis to compete in the Navy Fall Intersectional. Halsey Richards, Allie Zablocki, Kelley Millane, and Katie Oberwager sailed in 420's and FJ's, while Rafe Pilling, Doug Lotz, and Aaron Dornbrand-Lo sailied in Laser Fullrig and Radials. Penn finnished 18th overall. The next weekend the Women's team consisting of Kelley, Katie, Kelsey, and Amanda Johnson sailed at UCONN and finished 8th overall. Doug, Aaron, Rafe, and Alie competed at Kings Point and finnished 9th overall.

No Fall Break For The Sailing Team

While the rest of the campus was taking some time off this weekend, the team sent people to two regattas this weekend. The first was the McCurdy Open at Delaware. Rafe Pilling, Cory Krasnoff, Erol Toker, and QT Lin made the trip, but unfortunately there was not enough wind to sail enough races to constitute a regatta. Meanwhile Kelley Millane, Katie Oberwager, Amanda Johnson, Kelsey, and Amanda Veccione traveled to Annapolis to sail in Navy Womens where they placed 12th overall. It's That Time of Year

So after a long summer break, the sailing team is back on the water, with some new additions to the team. We sailed quite a few regattas and here are some of the highlights: We placed seventh overall at the New York Maritime Regatta, September 20-21, with Halsey Richards and Sophia Gerrard sailing in A division and Doug Lotz and Alie Zablucky in B. At the OCC Regatta, September 20-21, The team came in 2nd overall with Kelley Millane and Katie Oberwager sailing in A and Amanda Johnson and Kelsi Schoenrock competing in B. This past weekend we hosted thePhilly Fleet Race, giving a lot of the new members an opportunity to sail.

This past weekend the sailing team competed in not one but two regattas! First at the Ted Ferrarone Team Race at URI Garth Fasano, Brice LeFort, Pat Curran, Aaron Dornerano-Lo, Doug Lotz , and Bri Morgan finished sixth overall. At the same time, sailing at OCC in the 2008 MAISA Intercollegiate Sailing Association Qualifying Regatta, Amanda Johnson, Amanda Veccione, Kelly Millane, and Mike Schnitt qualified for the next round and will be sailing for the America Trophy soon! Old Guard for Mosbacher/Knapp/Owen Trophies

Several members of the sailing team ventured to Yale to compete in the Old Guard for Mosbacher/Knapp/Owen Trophies Regatta. Brice LeFort, Katie Buzby, Garth Fasano, and Kelly Millane finished sixth in A Division while Pat Curren and Brianna Morgan won B Division! Overall Penn finished fourth with 139 points.

Truxtun Umsted Intersectional

March 15-16, the sailing team sent Garth "Barf" Fasano, Kelly Millane, Brice LeFort, Katie Buzby, Brianna Morgan, and Pat Curren to Navy to compete in the Truxtun Umsted Intersectional Regatta. This past weekend Garth Fasano, Kelly Millane, Pat Curran, and Bri Morgan finnished second at the Graham Hall Team Race at Navy. Also Amanda Johnson, Amanda Veccione, Doug Lotz, and Rafe Pilling sailed at ODU, finishing 9th overall. This weekend was a great start early in the season.

This was a phenomenal season for the Penn Sailing Team. Not only did we more than double the size of our team but we also climbed as high as 11th in the Sailing World national rankings before settling into 15th place as our Fall season ended!

We traveled to 15 regattas this season and finished our season with very strong results. Many weekends we fielded two and even three teams. In addition to a strong 6th place finish at the prestigious Hood Trophy at Tufts, we won the Kings Point Dingy Open and then finished in 3rd place at the MAISA Championship War Memorial Regatta. We even fielded our first ever Women's team that competed in the very competitive Navy Fall Women's regatta. To finish the season, we competed in the Atlantic Coast Championship in St. Petersburg, Florida. We are looking to continue our impressive performance in the Spring with an even stronger roster. We could not have done this without your strong and continued support. Over the summer, we completed construction of our new docks that now fit all nine boats. We also purchased a new Evinrude outboard engine for our coach boat. Towards the end of the season, Steve Keen, on of the top speed coaches, was able to spend a few weeks coaching us before our big regattas. Skip Swikart, our alumni adviser, is currently organizing a fundraising campaign that will allow us to continue to travel and draw the talented sailors and coaches that have helped make our team as successful as it is today. Finally, I am proud to announce that the Doug Lotz and Kelley Millane are the new captains of the Penn Sailing Team.

Penn Sailing News:

The Quakers have ended their fall season with a respectable showing in the toughest regatta of the semester, the Atlantic Coast Championships held in St Petersburg, FL at Eckerd College. Penn finished 14th and every school that finished above the Quakers was nationally ranked above our squad. The results are below. Current national rankings can be seen by clicking here: . Of the top 20, only Penn and Boston University are Club programs. Penn finishes the semester nationally ranked 15th and was ranked or mentioned in every ranking period except one, a record which is the envy of every club program and a majority of the ICSA varsity programs.

In other sailing news, former 12 time national champion and Penn Sailing Varsity Captain and letter winner Cory Fisher Sertl (C'80) is in 3rd place in the USSailing Women's Keelboat Championship. More info can be found here . Interestingly, right behind Cory is 2008 U. S. Olympian Anna Tunnicliffe.

UPenn Sailing Ranked 11th Nationally!

As of October 31, 2007, UPenn, following our great performances at both Kings Point and War Memorial, is ranked 11th overall in the national sailing world rankings! This places us among the top varsity programs in the country! Be sure to watch our performance at ACCs in Florida.

War Memorial 3rd Place!

Penn finished the War Memorial in 3rd place overall, easily qualifying for the Atlantic Coast Championship on Nov 10th and 11th! Both days were breezy and the competition was very challenging. Garth Fasano and Kelley Millane won "A" division. Pat Curran, Bri Morgan and Doug Lotz all had a strong performance in "B" division. Overall, we finished ahead of many ranked schools and varsity programs.

Penn Sailing Wins KP Dingy Open!

Garth Fasano and Kelley Millane won A division with a total of 22 points over 13 races. Pat Curran and Bri Morgan won a tiebreaker for first place in B division with 29 points over 13 races. Overall, Penn came in first place with 51 points, 5 points ahead of second places.

Pat Curran, Bri Morgan, Garth Fasano and Kelley Millane are in 2nd place overall after the first day with 40 points, just 3 points out of first place.

One Weekend, Three Regattas

This past weekend was another important one for the Penn Sailing Team. We had 15 people sailing at three different regattas.

For the second time, our women's team sailed at the Naval Academy in the three division Navy Fall regatta. Amanda Johnson and Katie Buzby sailed A division, Bri Morgan and Amanda Vecchione sailed in B division and Kelley Millane sailed in a Laser Radial.

Another team was in Hampton Virginia and finished 4th out of 10. Doug Lotz and Matt Luongo sailed A division and Alec Ofsevit and Christine Roche sailed in B division.

Finally, at Delaware we came in 3rd out of 8. Mike Schnitt and Elana Lev/ Brittany Cummins sailed A, while Jake Rosenberg and Stacey Toseland sailed in B.

This coming weekend we are sailing at Central #2 at Washington College and the 4 division regatta Navy Fall at the Naval Academy.

Princeton Women's Regatta Recap

This past weekend marks a great milestone for Penn Sailing with our participation in our first ever Women's Regatta.

Senior Christine Roche, Junior Katie Buzby, and Freshmen Amanda Johnson and Amanda Vecchione all competed at the regatta held at Princeton's yacht club in Perth Amboy, NJ.

Conditions were very light the first day, but the team did extraordinarily well, with Amanda and Katie finishing first in their division, and Amanda V and Christine finishing 3rd in one of their races. The second day proved more difficult for the team, with shifty conditions and a very short race course. Overall, the team ended up 5th- a great accomplishment for our first ever women's team!

Philly Fleet Race

This weekend, Septemeber 29th and 30th, we are hosting the Philly Fleet Race at the Corinthian Yacht Club. Eight teams from up and down the East Coast will be attending.

Pat Curran Qualifies for U.S. Laser Olympic Trials

This past weekend Pat Curran ('08) raced lasers in Westport, CT earning a coveted spot to race at the upcoming U.S. Olympic Trials. Pat respectfully declined the offer, deciding to focus on his academics and college sailing. Pat used the opportunity race against other Olympic Trials competitors to practice for the MAISA Singlehanded Championship that he will sail at the Naval Academy September 29-30.

Central #1 at OCC Report

This weekend our team traveled to the Toms River Yacht Club to race in the Central #1 regatta hosted by Ocean County College.

On Saturday, a cold front brought high winds with gusts reaching 25 knots. Sailing in A Division, Amanda Johnson (’11) and Bri Morgan (’08), whose combined height was just over 10 feet and combined weight toped the scale at 220 lbs, made an outstanding achievement working through the day’s challenging conditions.

Sunday, had lighter winds starting from the North and clocking right through out the day, resulting in a shifty shore breeze. This made for exceptionally tricky conditions. In B Division, Garth Fasano (’08) and Kelley Millane (’09) finished the day with six straight bullets. Amanda Vecchione (’11) crewed in A division while Bri ran the half marathon in Philadelphia setting a personal best.

The team finished 3rd overall, 9th in A division, and 1st in B division, thus qualifying us for the War Memorial Regatta later this season. Also supporting the team at this regatta were alumni Skip Swikart, Drew Seibert (’56), and a member of the class of 1957. Thank you for all your support!

Preseason Ranked 18th!

I am proud to report that we are currently ranked 18th nationally going into the Fall season! Below is an excerpt from the full article in Sailing World.

"U/Pennsylvania will once again have a very strong coed team. Led by Pat Curran and Garth Fasano the Penn team will almost certainly be in the top 20 all year and has a chance to break into the top 5. Penn narrowly missed a chance to compete at Nationals last spring but with the new format they should be a lock to make it to the Nationals this season."

When I came to Penn in 1948 there was no active sailing program. I heard, from a fraternity brother, Roy Robinson, that it was possible to sail at other schools since we had no boats. Roy had done this on occasion. We were able to go to Princeton, Annapolis, George Washington and Kings Point to participate in regattas. By my sophomore year, we had added a number of sailors and I remember Charley Stewart, Chuck Evans,Warren Eve from Bermuda, Austin Heath, Julian Magnus and Bud Halpert as the "regulars" who were very active. As I indicated previously we were very fortunate to have Dr.Britton Chance as a faculty advisor( as recantly as 2001, at age 88, he was still a staff member at Penn) and, through his efforts and financial help, we were able to buy our first boats, the sloop rigged Fairey Fireflies from England. They were far superior to the single sail dinghies most clubs used so we had lots of visitors when our program became known. Locally, Drexel sailed with us frequently. When we first got our boats we sailed on the river from boathouse row surrounded by rowers but after one year we moved to the Cooper River Yacht Club in Camden where we were made to feel at home and benefitted from a much nicer, sailing oriented situation. I'm not sure how long Cooper River remained as a base but I certainly enjoyed it. When I left in '52, the club was very active and I' m very pleased to see how well it has survived.

America's Trophy

A solid success. Besides having a great time, we beat two top 20 ranked teams and had a shot at qualifying for nationals. We sailed only 4 people the whole time through varying conditions compared to other teams that qualified for nationals using several skippers and crews. Overall, we did better than our team has done since 1976 and we expect to do even better with a deeper team next year.

Awards

We had our final banquet on April 13th. The following awards were given out...

Best Skipper - Pat Curran - Pat has sailed very well this year. He is always on the water practicing and sails frequently during the summer.

Best Crew - Bri Morgan - Bri came to Penn not planning to sail, however, she quickly secured a spot on our A team. She sails nearly every weekend and is our current social chair.

Most Improved - Doug Lotz - Doug started his first semester freshman year crewing. He quickly became a skipper and even sailed Lasers in Annapolis. With two years left he is vying for a spot on the A team.

Most Dedicated - Caroline Keogh - Caroline was the captain as a sophomore and has not stopped contributing to the team since then. Whether she is skippering Lasers, crewing or the center of attention at social functions she is always helping out the team.
